Character Name: Kai Koshio
Race: Small Build Ca’Liar
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Character Description: Kai shares much of the same fur colors as his father, the only of his siblings to do so. He has bright yellow eyes, white-gray fur and dark gray markings. His fur has a snow leopard pattern and a slightly darker outer coat from his mother. Kai keeps his hair in a short wavy ponytail with his bangs parted. He stands at 4’4 and usually wears a blue coat with a red hood.
He places a good bit of importance on style and looking good. With Ko’Shio not around to ‘defend’ himself from allegations of being cute and feminine, Kai heard plenty and saw it only as a positive. Kasakir also helped to support the idea of such traits being a good thing. A man attractive to all, fierce, handsome and cute all at once? Who wouldn’t want to be that?
Character Personality/Traits:
Kai is very self-confident, many would say a bit too much. He’s childish and tends to hold grudges, though he tries not to show it. He is fairly disrespectful and blunt with his words. He believes himself to be at an advantage over others due to his upbringing. Because of this, he holds himself to a higher standard and is easily frustrated when he feels like he’s not doing good enough.
When he feels like he is doing good enough however, he is boastful and arrogant. He loves praise and attention, usually acting out in attempts to pull all eyes on him. He isn’t a liar however, and makes an important point to avoid telling lies so he can use it against his sister Suki. Kai can be a bit of a jerk, especially to his younger brother Suke, but at the same time he’s very protective of other people messing with his family. Kai wants to be a great swordsman, or rather he believes he is destined to be a great swordsman. His father was a Samurai, his mother was a warrior, and his other Uncle-Father-Guy is the Arena Master. Fighting is in his blood, it's the only path possible! He doesn't desire to be an honorable samurai or anything, he simply wants to be the best. Because if he isn't the best with all his awesome advantages, then that would mean he's a loser. So he has to work hard to avoid that fate and stay on top, to show everyone how great he and his family are. Additionally, if he becomes the best then they won't have to worry about losing him, and he won't have to worry about losing them.
Character Biography:
Kai was born in Falkvard, one of a litter of four to S’Kara and Ko’Shio. Of the four, three survived; Kai, Suke and Suki, while Sukauto unfortunately didn’t make it. His parents wouldn’t realize it, but Kai would very early on begin to feel like he was ‘special’ due to the fact that of the children, he was the only one born of Ko’Shio’s fur, even the slight difference of having a ‘unique’ name among his siblings made him feel different. This was somewhat reinforced by Ko’Shio’s encouragement of Kai’s wild dreams as a child, and even more so when it was discovered that Kai was the only one born with magic.
Ko’Shio would not be around for long unfortunately. While the children were still very young, their father died in battle. They weren’t old enough to truly understand it, but the grief of their mother was obvious. Sometimes she would cry, sometimes she would yell about how the Kingdom took everything from them, and sometimes she would just sit and do nothing at all. Perhaps unintentionally, S’Kara’s grieving had cemented an idea in Kai’s mind; The Kingdom sent his father to his death, and then took everything he had from them. Treasures and heirlooms that were meant for their family, to be passed down for generations. Despite being a Ca'Liar, Kai doesn't know much about Einar or his people as S'Kara often gets uncomfortable when discussing anything beyond the most basic information.
There was also a third parent. Though Kasakir had only joined the household after they were born, the children were too young to really remember the time before the pink Avalti was around. It was him that helped to curb Kai’s potential hatred of the Kingdom cause by S’Kara’s late-night rants. Kasakir was part of the Guard and would take the time to try and explain things for the kids so they didn’t accidentally take S’Kara’s episodes as complete truth. S'Kara was not the most knowledgeable, so Kasakir and their tutor Colel was where they got most of their information. Kasakir was normally the ‘answer man’ for the kids as he took the time to explain things, however there was one subject where even Kasakir did not dare venture; Why two dads? Awkward questions they had did not often receive sufficient answers, leaving the kids to come up with their own conclusions for why they had 3 parents when other kids had only 2. At first, Kai believed it meant he was half Small-Build, half Large-Build, and half Avalti. Which of course meant he would grow up to be fast, strong, and able to fly.
It took a bit of time before they could get him to understand that he could not be three halves, and that he wasn’t going to grow wings like Kasakir. This served as a first step of Kai beginning to distance himself from him. At first it was nothing substantial, but as the Avalti began to appear less frequently around the house it became easier to see him more like an Uncle than a Parent. Then there was an incident where Kasakir said he would start bringing Kai to the arena with him, but never did. Instead of bringing it up, Kai instead pouted and held the grudge internally. The final cause of the secret grudge was when Kasakir brought the young Ca’Liar to an auction where Ko’Shio’s blade was finally being sold, and did not attempt to bid on it.
S’Kara had sent the two of them to the auction with plenty of money, and after hearing her complain about the Kingdom stealing the blade from their family, Kai was sure they’d want it back. He complained to his mother about Kasakir not bidding, and while she seemed taken aback she too tried to tell Kai it was okay, that Ko’Shio would want his sword to be used rather than become a mantlepiece. S’Kara had already long been shooting down Kai’s ambitions to be a warrior like his father out of fear of eventually losing him too. With young angst building against both of his current parents, Kai was left with the one he lost. The one both his parents were always telling stories about.
From stories, faint memories, and what he overheard, he built an idealized image of his father in his mind. Ko'Shio had the 'advantage' of not being alive, and therefore could do no wrong for Kai to get mad at him. Ko'Shio could not ground him like S'Kara did, nor could he forget to take him places like Kasakir. He pictured his father as a samurai in foreign lands, unmatched in skill and speed, wielding several swords of legendary power. A man who was not just fierce and powerful, but kind and cute at the same time! So charismatic that he even had two lovers. Kai had overheard some conversations between S’Kara and Kasakir, oftentimes they would talk about how they cared for each other, but were not ‘interested’ in each other. He came to his own conclusions since most of his questions were met with awkward avoidance.
Once he was old enough, S’Kara would let him venture the city on his own to sate his curiosity and drain some of that endless energy she was too exhausted to keep up with. But sometimes he’d sneak outside of the city limits despite her insistence that he get nowhere near the outskirts. He wouldn’t go far, only to the hill with the Sakura Tree planted for his sister who had died at birth. Alongside it was his father’s grave, and it became his usual thinking spot. Despite how he might’ve felt about S’Kara and Kasakir from time to time, they were his family. The spot reminded him that from the fiercest of warriors, to the most fragile of children, he could lose anyone in the blink of an eye. He couldn’t bear the idea of being so helpless that he couldn't do anything for his family. He HAD to be able to protect everyone, even if they tried to stop him, he HAD to become a strong warrior!
As for his living siblings, Kai was far less respectful. He had trouble getting along with them. Mostly because he would cause trouble for them. Suki being a Medium-Build took on the role of the ‘older sister’ despite being the same age, something that often pissed Kai off. Inversely, Suke became the ‘younger brother’ due to his mild mannered nature, or as Kai would call it ‘crybaby attitude.’ Kai often would tease his siblings, much to his own detriment. With Suke, it would end with him crying and Kai getting in trouble with S'Kara. With Suki, it would end with her wrestling him to the ground and Kai complaining that she ‘wasn’t playing fair.’ Suki would also often deflect blame towards Kai, whether it was really his fault or not. His sister’s lies angered him, so he made it an important point to not tell lies himself so he could always call her out for being a liar.
While Kai often picks on Suke, he’s also protective of him. As a child, Suke once touched the stove and burned his hand while S’Kara watched and refused to take him to the hospital. In the moment, Kai punched at her shins and called her the ‘Worst mom ever!’ Yet later on, would go to make fun of Suke for being such a crybaby over the incident. When Suke shot back and said he’d cry too, Kai thought he had to prove himself... And so he too touched the stove. S’Kara was in disbelief that her son could be so stupid, but in his mind he had to do it. Suke was too weak and Suki was a dumb liar, so he had to be the tough one who would protect them. Even if S'Kara grounded him for play fighting and Kasakir ditched their plans for Arena visits, Kai was determined to become strong! He'd show them both that he had what it takes, that they didn't need to worry about losing him. But most importantly, he'd be able to make sure he never lost them either. There was also something else S'Kara's grieving had cemented in her kids. Something that affected all of them, but they tried not to show. Fear. Plenty of times had they heard her nostalgic stories about their father, how he was the bravest man she ever knew. How determined and strong he was. And yet even someone so strong was taken from them by monsters. The grief-ridden S'Kara warned her children of the dangers of the world, she couldn't bear the idea of losing them like she had Ko'Shio. Just outside the walls there were untold horrors and abominations, undead and beasts capable of killing even the most fierce warriors in an instant. At first they were all gripped by the same fear and paranoia, but as they grew they each found their own ways of living with it. Suki somewhat distanced herself from her siblings and hid her fears well, focusing on what she could do within the safety of the cities. She would never have to worry about facing the monsters outside. Suke however was quick to jump at shadows and wake crying from nightmares. Kai saw how the fear of the monsters affected his whole family, and he realized he had to do something about it. Suki looked away from them, Suke shriveled up in fear, S'Kara became hopeless against them. But not him, he would rise above the fear. He'd become strong, he'd beat all the evil and show them all that they had nothing to fear as long as he was around!
While Kai had begun holding little grudges against S’Kara and Kasakir, he didn’t hate them. Even if he said he did sometimes. He still took pride in his mother’s powerful warrior blood, and in Kasakir’s status as Arena Master. Despite not receiving much direction from them, he viewed himself as something like their disciple, that somehow simply being raised by them had cemented their strength and skill within him as well. Eventually, S'Kara relented to the unyielding energy of youth and allowed Kai to start learning some basic sword skills under Kasakir's tutelage. The especially small Avalti made for a surprisingly effective tutor for the young Ca'Liar, and they slowly began to spend more time together. Although Kasakir tried to teach him discipline and restraint along with their lessons, Kai mostly ignored all of his advice about being humble and dumb stuff like that.
With such a legendary samurai as his father, such a powerful warrior as his mother, the Arena Master as his Uncle-Father-Thing, and being the only child blessed with magic, Kai knew he had been destined for greatness! The more S’Kara tried to steer him away from the path of the warrior, the more Kai hungered for it. He'd prove to her he could do it, that she didn't have to be afraid of losing him. It would be criminal to sit around and become some average no-name when he had such gifts, he refused to let fear control him and keep him from his destiny!

Magic Biography:
Kai was the only one of the litter found to have any magic potential. This of course furthered his idea of being the ‘special’ one, the one destined for greatness. He’d often use it to tease his other siblings until his mother got sick of it and forbade his casting at all until he learned to behave better. Because of this his skills fell behind, but he would bide his time and cast in secret until he became the best!
Please describe the magic system, including its limitations in your own words:
To cast Magic, you need multiple things:
Bothimir's Gift - Without Bothimir's Gift, a character simply cannot perform magic outside of witchcraft or other outlying methods. A character must be born with Bothimir's Gift, they can't obtain it later in life through any known means.
Training - In order to cast magic, a character has to train with it. Mage Characters can cast magic at Weak level to start and must train using the system over time to obtain stronger magic in their desired aspects.
Trinkets - Aside from a few natural-caster races, characters require Trinkets to cast magic of any kind. To cast a type of magic, you need a Trinket of that aspect. Your Trinket also determines how strong you can cast up to, even if you are a Strong Fire Mage with a Medium Trinket you can only cast up to Medium, and try to cast anything higher could cause the trinket to overload and/or explode.
Aspects - While magic up to Medium level in each aspect is possible, characters have only a few specific Aspects they can train beyond Medium. Their number of Aspects depends on their race. Also, a character cannot cast both Holy and Dark Magic of any kind, they can only be blessed with one of the two.
Drain - Casting takes a toll on the body and mind. Mages can only cast so much depending on their level in the caster aspect. They can cast at their strongest level up to 5 times, their 2nd strongest up to 10, 3rd strongest up to 20 and so on. This doesn't mean they can cast Wondrous 5 times, Powerful 10 times and then Stronger 20 times, the drain carries over meaning that casting their strongest level magic would use up double their 2nd strongest and so on. If they continue to cast after they're drained, they begin Overcasting and require rolls that could cause injury or death to them. There are some exceptions to Magic Drain such as Holy Shields costing 1/20th the amount of normal casting and using Holy Magic offensively against non-dark creatures costing double aside from a few specific spells.
Please describe how you would use a weak trinket with your characters first/only aspect:
After discovering that he was the first of the kids able to use Magic, Kai would often cast it to show off to his siblings, focusing hard on getting a head start before they got theirs. After discovering he was the only child who could use Magic, he'd often use that fact to rub in their faces. He'd use it to sneakily bonk Suke with little pebbles and tease him, and eventually he used it to hit Suki in the head with a rock during one of their fights. She was using her superior strength to hold him down, so it was only fair he use his superior Magic to get her off, at least he thought. After that S'Kara banned Kai from using any more magic until he learned to behave and not hurt people with it.
